Here are just a few of the wonderful places awaiting you in beautiful Florala.
- On Main Street, you will most likely find bargains galore at the antique stores.
- Travel down South 5th Street and stop in at the L & N Railroad Depot, recently restored by the Florala Historical Society.
- Drive or walk a little further down and lovely turn-of-the century homes will be revealed to you. Some homes are available at a mere fraction of their replacement cost. At the end of the street, you will see the magnificent Hughes Mansion, an absolute architectural delight. Originally built by Mr. James Hughes, saw mill owner and one of the founding fathers of Florala, he was able to hand pick the finest pines used in the construction.
- As you drive east on U.S. Hwy 331, you will be taken by the beautiful lake front homes. You might even want to take advantage of an overnight stay in "The Lake House", a grand Victorian bed and breakfast inn overlooking Lake Jackson. You will enjoy the view of the lake, as you feast on a delicious southern style breakfast.
- Travel east and visit Florala Memorial Hospital. Yes, that's right... stop in and view incredibly talented artisans in the creation of stained glass windows that were built for a Jewish Temple in Montgomery, Alabama. Before being brought to Florala, the windows graced the temple for years. Don't miss them!
- Beautiful Lake Jackson is the center point of tourism for the Tri-city Area. It is without a doubt, one of the clearest and cleanest natural bodies of water in the state. Lake Jackson is the home of Florala State Park where fishing, swimming, boating, skiing, and camping are year-round events. The RV Park has recently been up-graded and now offers full sewage hookup for all of its 23 campsites. Ten primitive sites are also adjacent to the RV park. Large picnicking areas, along with beaches and meeting rooms are also available at the park. Future plans for the lake include a wetland park with a gazebo and elevated boardwalk to be constructed by the City of Florala.
While Lockhart may be a small town, it does have some charm of it's own. Be sure to drive down Seminole Street, a unique street laden with massive oak trees. The huge branches shade the street and adorn the wonderful homes of former owners and operators of the mill. You will enjoy this trip down memory lane!
